Begum Akay, MD

Begum Akay, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship trained pediatric general and thoracic surgeon with additional training and certification in surgical critical care. She joined the department of Pediatric Surgery at Corewell Children's in 2013. She was raised in Indianapolis and attended Purdue University for her biomedical engineering degree and Indiana School of Medicine for her medical degree. Dr. Akay did her General Surgery training at Corewell. She completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and Pediatric Surgical Fellowship at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She also did a research fellowship in ECMO at the University of Michigan. Dr. Akay has been a committed member of the Corewell community for more than over 10 years. She has served on various committees and serves as the associate program director for the General Surgery Residency. She is also the section head of Pediatric Surgery for Corewell Health Troy Hospital. She is involved locally and nationally in general surgical and pediatric surgical groups and organizations. Her clinical interests include a wide range of pediatric general and thoracic surgery for children of all ages and sizes. Some specific special interests include neonatal surgery, Hirschsprung's disease, minimally invasive surgery and surgical quality improvement. She is committed to communication between patients, families and colleagues. Dr. Akay has been recognized yearly as one of Hour Detroit Magazine's 'Top Docs' since 2014.
