When I was in college, I had the opportunity to go on a medical mission trip. I got to see, up close, how medical care can make a transformational difference in someone’s life. It inspired me to pursue my own career in medicine.

As a geneticist, I work with patients who have a wide variety of known, suspected, or possible genetic conditions. I am especially passionate about rare diseases. I was part of a team that discovered a rare genetic syndrome called Bachman-Bupp syndrome (BABS) that affects a metabolic pathway in the body. I see patients from around the world with BABS and related conditions.

Patients and families that come to see me are often on complex medical journeys. With genetics, and especially in rare disorders, the honest truth is we don’t always know right away why something is happening. My job is to walk with my patients as we search for answers together. I spend a lot of time listening to my patients so that I can understand their concerns, explain their options, and help them decide how to proceed. It is always deeply satisfying when I can find answers and connect my patients with medical care teams or research opportunities that offer clarity and hope.
