About Dilip Samarapungavan
About the Provider
Dilip Samarapungavan ('Samar'), MD, is the medical director of the Multi-organ Transplant Center at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital. He has served as the hospital's primary kidney transplant physician since 2002, and has been instrumental in the growth of the kidney transplant program and the establishment and growth of Beaumont's liver transplant program. Before coming to Corewell, Dr. Samar was the medical director of nephrology inpatient services at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. He has brought an expansive depth of knowledge and experience in the field of immunosuppression in transplantation to the program. He has also practiced medicine extensively in the United Kingdom and India. Dr. Samarapungavan received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Madras in India. He underwent extensive training in transplant, renal, pulmonary and gastrointestinal medicine in the United Kingdom, and was awarded membership in the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom. He also completed a fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit. He has been honored with the Fellowship of the American Society of Nephrology. His research and clinical interests include: treatment of viral disease in transplantation; combined liver-kidney transplantation; treatment of kidney disease in liver failure and liver transplant; and kidney and pancreas transplantation. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine - Nephrology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Samarapungavan is committed to the exceptional care of individuals, with end stage renal disease and kidney transplants, with emphasis on a compassionate and personal approach.
