Franco L Fazzalari, MD

Franco Fazzalari , MD, completed medical school at University of Michigan School of Medicine. He finished his residency in General Surgery at the University of Michigan and continued there as a Critical Care and Extracorporeal Life Support / ECMO fellow. He completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School. He was also an instructor in cardiothoracic surgery, heart failure, mechanical assist devices and cardiac transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as Visiting Attending Faculty in Cardiothoracic Surgery at ISMETT Hospital UMPC, Italy where he was instrumental in the development and training of a new heart program. Dr. Fazzalari has a rich history in education of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. He served on the faculty of the University of Michigan Medical Center in the Department of Cardiac Surgery for 15 years where he taught residents and fellows how to perform heart surgery. He established a Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) three-star rated heart program for the University of Michigan in southeastern Michigan. Dr. Fazzalari specializes in all aspects of cardiac surgery with a particular interest in valvular repair, coronary bypass and minimally invasive approaches. He holds the highest (STS Three-Star) rating for quality outcomes in heart surgery. Dr. Fazzalari believes in patient-focused care and works to treat each person like he would want his own family treated. Dr. Fazzalari knows that surgery, particularly heart surgery, can be an intimidating experience so he strives to make his patients understand every step so they are comfortable with the process and have a thorough understanding of their individual treatment plan.
