I choose a career in medicine because I wanted to link my interest in science with the humanity and purpose of health care. My specialty is surgical correction of congenital heart defects, but I also understand that surgery is just one part of the patient journey. I am also passionate about ensuring that people living with congenital heart defects continue to receive excellent care throughout their lives.

My approach is based on teamwork. I’m privileged to work with a superb team of cardiologists, intensivists, nurses and physician assistants, and I consult with them regularly. We use the most advanced investigations and research to ensure we are making the wisest decisions and delivering the most complete and highest level of care for our patients. We also encourage feedback from patients and families, which helps us improve and learn.

It’s never easy to learn that your child may need heart surgery. I value the opportunity to speak with families, help them understand how we can help, and hopefully reduce their anxiety. And of course, it is enormously satisfying when I am able to prolong or improve a patient’s life through surgery. I love bumping into former patients at the clinic or hospital, sometimes many years after surgery, and hearing about their progress.
