Renzo Y Loyaga-Rendon, MD

Renzo Loyaga-Rendon, MD, PhD, is a board certified advanced heart failure and heart transplant cardiologist. He earned his medical degree from San Agustin University’s School of Medicine in Arequipa, Peru, where he graduated first of his class. He was awarded a grant by the Japanese Ministry of Education to continue post-graduate studies in Japan. Dr. Loyaga-Rendon earned a PhD from Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Because of his work on atherosclerosis he was given the “Biofuture Encouragement Award” granted to promising PhD students. His work also centered in the vascular tone regulation of blood pressure and its changes during pregnancy. Dr. Loyaga-Rendon completed his internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He completed his training in advanced heart failure and transplantation at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.  Prior to joining Spectrum Health, Dr. Loyaga-Rendon was an assistant professor of Medicine in the Section of Advanced Heart Failure and Heart Transplantation of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he was also associated scientist of the Center for Exercise Medicine.

His work on heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support has been published in prestigious medical journals and presented at numerous international and national conferences. Dr. Loyaga-Rendon’s clinical interests include heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support (LVAD), cardiomyopathies, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and invasive hemodynamics.
