About the Provider

Zakiya Shakir, MD, is a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist. Her clinical and surgical practice focuses on both benign and malignant breast diseases. She partners with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons to provide a personalized, team-based approach for each patient. She encourages patient education and empowerment to ensure comfort with decision making and takes a special interest in breast cancer survivorship. Dr. Shakir completed a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she gained valuable experience in oncoplastic surgery, breast conservation techniques, and skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomies. She completed her internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, where she was awarded Intern of the Year and Chief Resident of the Year. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She also serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

She explained things slowly and clearly, and allowed me to speak. Seems she did try to learn what kind of person I am, what is important to me. Again, I don't know what's right or wrong, and it takes time to put one's trust in provider, especially in a situation you would not choose to be in.
