Ziad Kanaan, MD, PhD is a practicing board-certified Gastroenterologist at Corewell Health Trenton Hospital. He specializes in Gastroenterology & Hepatology. A native of Beirut, Lebanon, Dr. Kanaan developed an interest in medicine early in life. While in medical school at the American University of Beirut, he also discovered a passion for research and academia. After receiving his Medical Degree in 2006, Dr. Kanaan started a Master's of Science and Ph.D at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He received his Master's degree focusing on Physiology and Biophysics in 2009 and his Ph.D. in 2010. While at the University of Louisville, Dr. Kanaan worked at the Price Institute of Surgical Research under the supervision of two nationally renowned surgeons and scientists, Dr. Hiram Polk and Dr. Susan Galandiuk. During his time there, he published over 30 articles and received many awards including the first prize award for best basic science research at the 'Association of VA Surgeons Meeting' and the first prize poster award at the 'Surgical Infection Society' 30th meeting'.Dr. Kanaan completed his residency training in internal medicine at Wayne State University Crittenton Hospital in 2015. He then completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center and subsequently joined Corewell Hospital in 2019. Dr. Kanaan's philosophy is not only to care about his patient's diagnosis but to care about them as a person too. Therefore, Dr. Kanaan treats every patient like his own family. He believes in educating and empowering his patients so that they are actively involved in their care which leads to a more successful treatment. His clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and viral hepatitis. Dr. Kanaan's research has focused on examining pathways by which colonic inflammation progresses into invasive colorectal cancer in some individuals with Crohn's colitis or ulcerative colitis. His focus was also on the role of microRNAs, which are regulators of gene expression. In his free time, Dr. Kanaan enjoys swimming and attending football games. He looks forward to traveling and exploring new places and cultures. He especially cherishes spending quality time with his wife and son.
